COVID -19
COVID-19 is a respiratory infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Since the virus continues to evolve and protection decreases over time, updated COVID-19 vaccination is recommended according to current guidance. Recommended for Everyone 6 months of age and older may receive COVID-19 vaccination, with stronger recommendations for people at increased risk of severe illness, including adults 65 and older, people with certain medical conditions, pregnant individuals, and others identified by NACI.
Flu (Influenza)
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. Because flu viruses change over time, annual vaccination is recommended to help protect against the strains expected to circulate each season. Recommended for Everyone 6 months of age and older, with particular importance for older adults, pregnant individuals, people with certain chronic health conditions, and others at higher risk of complications.
Tetanus
Tetanus is a serious infection caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria. The bacteria can enter the body through cuts, puncture wounds, or other breaks in the skin. Recommended for Everyone. Adults should stay up to date with tetanus-containing vaccines, including booster doses as recommended by the provincial schedule. In New Brunswick, tetanus-containing boosters are routinely recommended every 10 years.
Routine & Adult Vaccines
Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can cause severe and prolonged coughing. It can be particularly serious for young infants. Recommended for Infants and children as part of routine immunization, adults who have not previously received an adult Tdap dose, and pregnant individuals during every pregnancy. Tdap is ideally given between 27 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Chickenpox is a contagious infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It commonly causes an itchy rash and can sometimes lead to more serious complications. Recommended for Children as part of routine immunization, as well as individuals who have not previously had chickenpox or received the vaccine and may be susceptible to infection. In New Brunswick, routine childhood vaccination includes doses at 12 and 18 months.
Chickenpox (Varicella)
Shingles
Shingles (herpes zoster) occurs when the varicella-zoster virus becomes active again after a previous chickenpox infection. It can cause a painful rash and may lead to long-lasting nerve pain. Recommended for Adults 50 years of age and older, as well as adults 18 years and older who are or will be immunocompromised. Shingles vaccination is generally given as a two-dose series.
Human papillomavirus (HPV)
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus that can cause several types of cancer, as well as genital warts. HPV vaccination helps protect against the HPV types that can cause these diseases and provides the greatest benefit when given before exposure to the virus. Recommended for Individuals 9 to 26 years of age. Vaccination may also be considered for individuals 27 years of age and older based on individual risk and discussion with a healthcare provider. The HPV vaccine is also recommended for people who may have missed vaccination earlier in life.
Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and bloodstream infections. It can progress quickly and may be life-threatening. Recommended for Children and adolescents according to the routine immunization schedule, as well as individuals at increased risk or those who may need protection because of travel or other circumstances. In New Brunswick, meningococcal vaccination is routinely given during childhood and in Grade 9. Vaccine recommendations and eligibility may vary depending on age, health conditions and travel plans.
Meningitis (Meningococcal Disease)
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver and can spread through contaminated food, water or close contact with an infected person. Vaccination can help prevent infection, particularly when travelling to areas where hepatitis A is more common. Recommended for Travellers to certain destinations and individuals with specific health or lifestyle factors that may increase their risk of hepatitis A infection. Recommendations and publicly funded eligibility may vary by province.
Travel Vaccines
Travel vaccine recommendations depend on your destination, itinerary and individual health needs.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that affects the liver and can be spread through infected blood and other bodily fluids. Some infections can become chronic and lead to serious liver complications. Recommended for Infants and children as part of routine immunization, as well as individuals with certain health conditions, occupational or other risk factors. Hepatitis B vaccination may also be recommended for travellers to certain destinations.
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella Typhi. It is primarily spread through contaminated food and water and is more common in areas with inadequate sanitation. Recommended for Travellers visiting areas where typhoid fever is common, particularly when travelling to regions where access to safe food and drinking water may be limited. Travel vaccination recommendations depend on your destination, itinerary and individual risk.
Typhoid
Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is a viral infection transmitted by infected mosquitoes in certain tropical regions. It can cause serious illness and, in severe cases, can be life-threatening. Recommended for Travellers visiting countries or regions where yellow fever is present or where proof of vaccination may be required for entry. Travel requirements vary by destination. A travel health assessment is recommended before your trip.
Rabies
Rabies is a serious viral infection that affects the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. It is usually transmitted through the bite or saliva of an infected animal. Recommended for Travellers and individuals who may have an increased risk of exposure to rabies, including those travelling to areas where rabies is more common or where access to medical care may be limited. Rabies vaccination may be recommended before travel or after a potential exposure, depending on the circumstances.
Polio is a highly contagious viral infection that can affect the nervous system and, in some cases, cause permanent paralysis. Vaccination provides strong protection against poliovirus. Recommended for Children as part of routine immunization, as well as adults who are not adequately vaccinated and may be at increased risk. Vaccination may also be recommended for travellers visiting areas where poliovirus is circulating. New Brunswick's routine childhood schedule includes polio-containing vaccines.
